The Berks County Intermediate Unit, on behalf of the Berks County school districts, has developed a consortium approach in ensuring that PIAA officials serving the Berks County schools are in compliance with PIAA regulations regarding the submission of various background reports required by Act 114 of 2006. If you are a PIAA official now or are looking to become one in the future, the following information may be helpful.
Background Information
PIAA officials registered on or after April 1, 2007, must obtain and submit copies of three (3) required background reports to PIAA as follows:
In addition to submitting these clearances to PIAA, officials, as independent contractors of school districts, must submit the original reports to the Berks County Intermediate Unit on behalf of all Berks County schools as outlined below.
The Berks County Schools Consortium
In an attempt to facilitate this process for both officials and school districts, the Berks County Intermediate Unit, at the request of the Berks County school districts, is serving as a clearinghouse for PIAA officials who must submit the aforementioned criminal and child abuse clearance reports pursuant to PIAA regulations.
PIAA officials subject to this requirement need only submit the original criminal and child abuse history reports, as well as your current PIAA identification card, to the Berks County Intermediate Unit, Department of Human Resources, at 1111 Commons Boulevard, Reading, PA 19612-6050. The BCIU will:
- review the clearances;
- make copies of the original reports;
- enter this information into a database accessible only by authorized school district personnel via a secure password system (such database containing the official’s name, address, phone number, PIAA registration date, the dates of all required clearances, and the sports officiated);
- maintain scanned copies of the PIAA identification card and clearances for review by authorized school district personnel via a secure password system; and
- maintain hard copies of the PIAA identification card and clearances in a secure location, accessible only by authorized BCIU Human Resources staff members.
Not only will this approach enable the PIAA official to submit the original reports to one entity, but the BCIU, as a local education agency, has the capacity and ability to streamline this process and ensure the confidentiality of all records and reports submitted by PIAA officials.
The Berks County schools appreciate the services provided by individuals willing to serve as officials and are confident that this consortium approach will benefit officials and school districts alike.
