About Berks County Head Start

What is Head Start?

A federally funded, comprehensive child development program that serves preschool children from the ages of three to five years.

Do I qualify for Head Start?

Children from ages three to five years who are from families with incomes below the poverty guidelines are eligible for Head Start services. In order to qualify, your family must meet the guidelines established annually. Head Start services are provided free of charge. Children from families experiencing homelessness, foster families, and families receiving public assistance such as TANF or SSI are also eligible.

Who is eligible for BCIU PA Pre-K Counts?

BCIU PA Pre-K Counts is free preschool designed for children who:

  • Are between age three and the age eligible for kindergarten

  • Live in families earning up to 300% of the federal poverty level (For 2024, a family of four earning $93,600 or less)
