Centralized Purchasing

The BCIU utilizes a centralized purchasing function to achieve operational efficiencies and cost savings. The Purchasing Services Department coordinates the agency’s purchasing activities and oversees the preparation and handling of RFPs and bids.

The Purchasing Services Department also oversees the Central Warehouse, located at the BCIU’s main facility on Commons Boulevard. The warehouse serves the needs of BCIU departments and stocks more than 500 items that are available for order by public school districts and non-public schools.

Joint Purchasing for School Districts

In addition, the department coordinates and maintains the bids for the Berks County Joint Purchasing Board consortium, which comprises 18 school districts, two career and technology centers, and the Berks County Intermediate Unit. The board works together to determine each year’s bids and bid specifications.
