Wilma Herrera, Bus / Van Specialist and Transportation Trainer, Office of Operations, has been named employee of the month for October 2024

Julie Van Lear, Assistant Program Administrator, Transportation, Office of Operations, shared, “Ms. Herrera embodies the idea of initiative. She constantly takes the lead to be sure that tasks are completed correctly. She takes personal responsibility for keeping our operations running smoothly and efficiently, all the while keeping the warmest and most inviting smile on her face!”

Wilma graduated from William Allen High School. She grew up in Allentown and now lives in Reading. Wilma has four children and seven grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoys going camping.

Wilma first worked in Transportation for the BCIU from 1999 to 2015. Unable to stay away for long, she returned as a van driver in November 2022. After earning her Commercial Driver’s License, Wilma was promoted to Bus / Van Specialist in April 2023 and is now a Pennsylvania State Certified School Bus Driver Instructor. In addition, she leads operations at the wash bay at the Route 61 Transportation Center. With the support of BCIU maintenance staff, this complex role involves managing the cleaning of nearly 250 vehicles across two locations. Under Wilma’s leadership, the BCIU has saved money by eliminating the need for an external contractor to wash buses. Her team’s work this past summer garnered praise, with many noting that, under her direction, the buses were cleaned faster and more thoroughly than ever before.

Wilma says the best part of her job is the people she works with and the opportunity to meet and connect with a diverse range of individuals, including BCIU students.

You might not know that Wilma placed tenth in the School Bus Driver Safety Competition and went on to compete at the state level, where she placed 32nd.
